Stella R Webb – On Becoming a Grandparent (1979)
[From ‘Bohemian Bagatelle‘, published 1979 by the Bohemians]
ON BECOMING A GRANDPARENT
First, you tell your friends and neighbours
There’s to be a little one –
Then there’s planning, knitting, buying,
For – maybe – your first grandson.
He’s arrived, and at hospital
Proud grandparents, every one,
Nudge each other, smiling broadly,
“There – you see – that’s my grandson!”
Then they’re home – new Mum and baby –
He’s the dearest little one –
Call the neighbours to admire him –
“Look – he’s here – he’s my grandson!”
Oh dear! He’s crying – call your daughter –
Hand him over to his Mum!
“Shall I feed him? Top and tail him?”
“Don’t ask me, dear, he’s your son!”
