Helen M. A. Holmes – “I Do Not Understand”
I Do Not Understand by Helen M. A. Holmes
I do not understand why I am I,
No other being but myself
Knows all my thoughts, hopes, fears,
The unheard sigh.
I do not understand why I am here,
I seek, I ask, I pray,
And wait with sore taxed faith
An answer clear.
I do not understand the sense of things,
All I have learnt, loved, borne,
Will vanish into space, the day I die,
Like air displaced by small birds’ wings
